AIRSTREAMING
I created the lead graphic for the Airstreaming exhibit in the Portland Art Museum as part of Portland's annual Sneaker Week in 2021. The exhibit was a collaboration with Roots n Rooftops, Bennu, Graade, and Hasaan Thomas, and brought together apparel and accessory design, furniture making, ceramics, and print making to celebrate sneaker culture and the Numberz Portland radio station.
The group project was inspired by relaxing and celebrating on our urban rooftops, where we can have space from the daily grind of city life to pause and dream of the future. The image conveyed a care-free futuristic character walking on clouds, with a nod to the shoe from Back To The Future II, the Nike Air Mag. The references to the Airstream camper were subtle hints about an ongoing camper renovation project by woodworker Bennu to auction off for a fundraiser benefitting The Numberz radio station. To bring this image to life I carved the design in linoleum and printed the images by hand on paper. I chose this method to achieve the most graphic results while maintaining a sense of grittiness associated with city living. The hand lettered type face was inspired by a vintage Airstream logo.
The graphic was used by Robert McCallum of Roots n Rooftops in his promotional designs for the Portland Art Museum exhibit on social media.
