FANTASTIC
A limited edition collection for Machus, a modern menswear boutique in Downtown Portland in Spring 2022, consisting of one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic mugs, dinnerware, stickers, and a limited run of t-shirts.
The target customers of Machus are men in the 25-45 age range with a taste for unique, art-inspired apparel, as well as a deeper knowledge and appreciation for sports and culture of previous decades. For inspiration I turned to the 1973 French animated film La Planète Sauvage (translated to Fantastic Planet in the USA), and using its vintage color palettes and fantastical shapes, I created a new world where basketball is in the DNA of every living thing. For the t-shirt design, I took the NBA's marketing campaign of the 80s and 90s tag line, "The NBA, it's fantastic!" and mashed it up with the theme of this collection. The back of the shirt featured one of the main characters from my new world.
The combination of elements from this animated 70s film and an 80s marketing campaign, with a color palette of vintage blues, reds, yellows, and greens created a feeling of nostalgia combined with an unusual aesthetic causing the viewer to jump out of time (and our world) entirely — a collection that feels both accessible and new. The ceramics and apparel were available for sale to the public in a pop-up event at Machus.
