THE GOAT MUG
Released in Spring 2019, this was the first limited edition mug collection inspired by sneaker culture that I created for Sissy Moon Ceramics. The collection consisted of ten handmade and individually hand painted mugs depicting the original 1984 Air Jordan I in the red, black, and white colorway. Each mug was numbered from one to ten, and featured a tiny goat symbol on its side. The illustrated outsoles were tinted yellow due to age, pointing to the sneaker’s historical richness as we see it today.
To begin the line of sneaker themed designs at Sissy Moon, I wanted to use the shoe that was essentially the beginning of sneaker culture. The red, black, and white colorway featured the main colors of the Chicago Bulls franchise and has the most visual contrast, ensuring the illustrations would have a strong graphic quality on the mugs. For the photo marketing materials, I was inspired by Anthony Taylor’s editorial work for Jordan Brand, and hired him with that in mind. We sought out a painted basketball court location with strong, mainly primary colors to complement and amplify the colors of the sneaker illustration.
The collection release was a success, selling out in a matter of hours. Much like the original AJ I shoes, these 10 mugs are now a collector’s item and function as the loud and clear beginning in Sissy Moon Ceramics’ work with sneaker culture designs. The minimal and gritty style of Anthony Taylor's work for Jordan brand combined with the playful color palette that is a key part of the Sissy Moon brand resulted in a unique and on-brand presentation for the Sissy Moon webshop and its social media outlets.
